Scientists in Germany have discovered 500 animal species in groundwater, in the whole of Europe there are 2,000. Together with bacteria, fungi and protozoa, the animals form a fascinating ecosystem, which is a prerequisite for clean drinking water.

The groundwater animals have adapted to the narrow gap system of the soil layers: Their bodies are small and often elongated to move through the narrow cavities. They are blind, colourless and have special tactile organs that allow them to orient themselves in the dark.

The groundwater animals are very sensitive. Pollution of groundwater can cause them great damage.

Numerous animals and microorganisms live in the gaps in the soil layers. These microorganisms make a decisive contribution to the quality of groundwater through the conversion of materials and energy.

Groundwater is a special habitat!
